Inspired by traditional resist dyeing techniques from around the world, clay resist allows you to create beautiful indigo and white patterns using a natural, tactile alternative to wax that has the advantage of not needing to be heated. • 50g Calcium bentonite clay
• 15g Magnesium sulphate
• 30g Gum Arabic
• Full instructions for mixing and using your resist paste

What is Clay Resist Dyeing?

Clay resist dyeing is a traditional textile technique where a paste is applied to fabric to prevent areas from absorbing dye. When the fabric is immersed in an indigo vat, the protected areas remain lighter, revealing beautiful patterns once the resist is removed.

Unlike wax resist batik, clay resist creates a softer, more organic style of patterning, making it perfect for experimental textile artists and natural dye enthusiasts. 

Using Clay Resist with Indigo

This kit is designed to be used with a natural indigo vat, such as our fructose indigo dye kit, and won't work with any other type of dye apart from indigo. Apply the clay resist paste to cotton, linen, hemp, or other suitable natural fibres before dyeing to create unique blue and white designs.
