What is a Fructose Indigo Vat?

A fructose vat is one of the simplest methods of creating an indigo vat at home, and one that is favoured by many natural dyers. Using fructose to reduce the natural indigo instead of synthetic reducing agents means the resulting vat is gentle, easy to maintain and can be reused over multiple dyeing sessions.

As fabric is removed from the vat, you'll be able to see it transform from a yellow-green colour to blue as the indigo oxidises in the air - a wonderful process that has captivated textile artists all over the world for centuries. One dip will give you a light sky blue colour, whilst repeated dips give a deeper and deeper shade.

Perfect For

This indigo dye kit is ideal for:

  • Shibori
  • Natural dyeing

Key Features

  • Natural Indigo Dye Kit - Make your own fructose indigo vat.
  • Traditional Dyeing Method - Uses fructose and Calcium Hydroxide.
  • Complete Kit - Includes the essential ingredients and instructions.
  • Reusable Vat - Can be maintained for multiple dyeing sessions.
  • Suitable for Beginners - Easy-to-follow instructions included.

What Else Do I Need to Start Indigo Dyeing?

  • A container to build your vat in - lots of people use a large lidded plastic bucket, but we like to use a big stockpot because it makes it much easier to heat the vat (which you'll need to do if you want to reuse it).
  • Scoured fabric - indigo dye works best with natural cellulose fibres like cotton, linen and hemp, and protein fibres like silk and wool. It's always best to scour your materials before dyeing to ensure even coverage - more information on this can be found in the printed instructions in your kit.
  • Gloves - though this type of vat is very gentle, it's always best to wear gloves.
  • A spoon or stirring stick - to wet the indigo and mix the vat.
