What is Batik?
Batik is a traditional wax resist dyeing technique that has been practised for centuries across Asia. Hot wax is applied to fabric using a tjanting tool, protecting selected areas from the dye. Once the fabric is dyed with natural indigo and the wax is removed, beautiful blue and white patterns are revealed.
The history of indigo batik is a rich one, spanning continents and cultures from Africa to Asia. Batik has been used with indigo dye for millenia, with indigo batik grave cloths from the 4th century BC having been excavated from tombs in Egypt. Who wouldn't want to be part of this textile tradition?!
About the Natural Indigo Vat
This kit uses a fructose indigo vat, a traditional method of reducing natural indigo using fructose (fruit sugar) rather than harsh synthetic reducing agents. The result is a gentle, reusable dye vat capable of producing rich shades of blue on natural fibres - the more you dip, the deeper the shade.
As many home dyers can attest, watching the fabric change from yellow-green to deep indigo as it oxidises in the air is one of the most magical parts of the batik process - it honestly never gets old!
