Handmade Batik Scarf Dyed with Natural Indigo in Thailand
These handmade batik scarves are dyed with natural indigo, and made using traditional batik techniques by a small family-run workshop in Northern Thailand. Featuring the rich blue tones of natural indigo, as well as the subtle variations that make each piece unique, these handmade scarves make a fantastic gift (for yourself, or someone else!).
About the maker
Pannee is a third generation indigo dyer based in Phrae, the home of MoHom (traditional indigo cloth). Historically her family made the traditional heavy indigo cloth and shirts that you'll find everywhere in Phrae, but at some point Pannee decided to branch out into batik, and has now spent decades creating the most beautiful batik clothing and accessories.
About the Indigo Dyeing Process
The batik scarves are printed with a wax resist pattern before being dyed using natural indigo, created from plant leaves using traditional methods. Once an indigo dye vat is created, it is "alive" and requires feeding to be kept active - some of the vats that Pannee uses have been going since before she was born!
Natural indigo produces distinctive deep blue tones and organic variations in colour, giving each scarf its own character. Combined with Pannee's bold block print batik techniques, the result is a truly individual handcrafted scarf.
