What is Batik?
Batik is a traditional wax resist dyeing technique in which melted wax is applied to fabric before it is dyed. The wax protects selected areas from the indigo, creating beautiful blue and white patterns once it is removed. Dipping your fabric multiple times will give you deeper shades of that beautiful indigo blue we all love.
Using the included canting tool, you can draw your own designs onto the scarf before dipping it into the natural indigo vat. You'll come away with a scarf that is completely unique, and a deeper knowledge of two of the world's oldest textile techniques.
About the Natural Indigo Vat
This kit uses a fructose indigo vat, an easy method of reducing natural indigo dye using fructose (fruit sugar) instead of synthetic reducing agents. Natural dyers around the world love this method for its simplicity, and the vat produces rich shades of blue and can be maintained for multiple dyeing sessions.
One of the joys of indigo dyeing is watching the fabric emerge from the vat yellow-green before it gradually oxidises to a deep, vibrant blue!
