What's Going On This Summer - Published 20 May 2017
| WHAT'S GOING ON THIS SUMMER? | | SHOWS, SHOWS AND MORE SHOWS
The summer season has started and we've already done four big shows so we have hit the ground running. Our first World Textile Day of the year was at Llanidloes in Wales and it was another great day. Next year will be the 10th one!
Liz Beasley gave a talk on Chilean weaving and a week or so later three weavers from Chile came over to stay with her and gave some workshops.
Next we took our van and stand to "Wonderwool" in Builth Wells, and another wonderful Show. If you've never been to it, try and get to it next year.
After that it was The Manchester Antique Textile Fair, the annual event organised by The Textile Society. Another really good day with some excellent talks as well as lots of stalls you won't find anywhere else.
Next we were off to a night in the New Forest ready for our World Textile Day South in Hampshire. What a brilliant day! Our guest speaker was indigo expert Jenny Balfour Paul. And shibori and indigo guru Jane Callender set up three indigo vats outside for a constant queue of people trying it out. The place was buzzing!
By the way... next year's World Textile Day South is moving eastwards and nearer to London. It will be on April 14th 2018 at East Horsley near Leatherhead in Surrey, so look out for more news on that one - we're not abandoning Wickham altogether though! | | | Last weekend Jim went up to Lancashire to speak at The Lancs and Lakes Guild of Weavers Spinners and Dyers, and our next talk is down in Sussex with the Wealden Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers in Horsham on Saturday afternoon 27th May. Visitors are welcome for a small charge.
After that we'll be at our WORLD TEXTILE DAY CENTRAL in King's Sutton near Banbury in Oxfordshire. The guest speaker is Christopher Aslan who came and gave us a short talk last year about his time in Uzbekistan. This year he's back as main speaker with hair-raising tales of trying to source natural dyestuffs in Afghanistan.
Then we'll be packing the van up to the gunnels and heading up to Scotland for World Textile Day Scotland in Bridge of Allan on June 17th followed by WOOLFEST in Cockermouth on June 23 and 24th. In between we're hoping to do some wild camping on the Argyle coast. | | | I have just put some new patchwork sample sets and bigger fat quarters on the website, if you're keen on sewing, and if printing is more your thing, there's plenty of woodblocks in stock too.
On the stand and in the shop, our new clothes are going down really well. It was definitely worth the extra 6 weeks I took in Thailand last year searching the markets for interesting fabrics and garments. I specially love the natural dyed jackets and dresses in cotton and bamboo fibre, long waistcoats with big pockets made from old Tai Dam head cloths and coats made in Thailand using ikat weavings I'd bought the year before in Indonesia!
